P4 Emotional Scene - AlphaMart
This scene was created to evoke a sense of discomfort, using visuals, color schemes, and the uncanny valley effect to achieve this.
Context:
This is a story of a farmer’s son. Tired of always being told to work on the farm, he decided to go to the nearest town where he saw a “Now Hiring!” poster in the grocery shop. On his way there, he saw some flickering light in the road but he didn’t pay any attention to it. “The government and their new fancy planes“ he thought, and in a blink of light he arrived. Although now inside the grocery shop, he can’t shake the feeling that it’s not how it has always looked like. Maybe a little bit… different? It’s on the player to understand what’s happening and how to get out of there.
Unbeknownst to the player, they have been abducted by aliens and placed in a fake city in order for them to study human behavior in a controlled environment. Because of this, the city does not quite feel right, and many small details are off, leading to an uncomfortable feeling. Sounds that might be commonplace feel off because the aliens do not understand why they are being produced, such as beeping of a cashier scanning items even though there is no cashier present. These clues will lead the player to realize they are not in their home town anymore and begin to try to escape the facility.
